"A rich, satisfying, complicated story. One of the best fantasy series I've read in years."--Christine Lynn Herman, author of The Devouring Gray
GAME OF THRONES meets THE DIVINERS in this thrilling fantasy -- the highly anticipated final book in Amanda Foody's THE SHADOW GAME series.
Return to the City of Sin, where the perilous final game is about to begin...The players? Twenty-two of the most powerful, most notorious people in New Reynes.
With no choice but to play, Enne and Levi are desperate to forge new alliances and bargain for their safety. But any misstep could turn deadly when a far more dangerous opponent appears on the board -- one plucked straight from the city's most gruesome legends. While Levi hides behind a mask of false promises, Enne is finally forced out from behind hers and as the game takes its final, vicious turn, these two must decide once and for all whether to be partners or enemies.
Because in a game for survival, there are no winners...
There are only monsters.
Review
Welcome back to New Reynes, a self-proclaimed Vegas-style town ripe with crime lords, gambling, and the mysterious Shadow Game. This time the story is told from 5 points of view: Harvey, Enne, Lola, and Sophia. With the addition of the new pov, we can delve into these fantastic characters’ arcs.
This whole series revolves around a game called the Shadow Game, and with each book, the stakes are even higher. This Shadow Game, created by Bryce Balfour, is a spin-off of those previous games. In this game, the 22 most influential and notorious people in new reynes play for their lives literally. Each player has a card of their own and their target card. For the game to end, one player must collect a string of 5 cards; if a player does not have his/her target card by the time the game ends, he/she dies. If a player gives away their card, they are placing their fate in that person’s hands. Amanda foody includes a chart in the print version, but I listened to the audiobook, so I did have to make my own to keep track of all the details of who had what card and who made deals with whom.
Amanda foody has interwoven a complex world here that is a real treat to visit every time you open the book. You may think you know how everything plays out, then a plot twist is dropped like a bomb, and everything is shaken up again. I am sad that the series is over, but it was a delight to read and listen.
It didn’t matter what card you were dealt. The City of Sin was a game and the only way to win was stack the cards in your favor. Check out my review for @AmandaFoody Queen of Volts third book in the Shadow Game Series Click To TweetRating Report | |
