If Paige isn't careful, her new job could land her in an early grave.

Paige Turner's zero-balance bank account demands she take on a new job, but she never expected it would be as Shadow Harbor's newest librarian. Now the unlucky orphan is learning it's not books she'll be shelving...but magic. Dark, dangerous, deadly magic.

Her new position requires she keep the supernatural subworld at bay while retrieving and archiving magical artifacts from around the globe. If she fails, the world may just be doomed...but even trying could get her killed.

Teaming up with a snarktastic teacup dragon doesn't seem to be helping, either. Paige still struggles to master magic and shelve supernatural secrets. And when her first assignment involves massive multiplication of a group of wayward werewolves, she fears the world may not survive her tenure as librarian.

Fans of The Librarians and Warehouse 13 will love this enchanting new cozy contemporary fantasy series.

You know what sounds like a dream job? Working in a library surrounded by books all day. You know what sounds considerably less appealing? Finding out that your new librarian position involves dangerous magical artifacts, supernatural creatures, and the very real possibility of dying before you’ve even figured out where the coffee is.

Welcome to Paige Turner’s new career!

Paige is broke, desperate for employment, and probably the last person anyone should put in charge of protecting the world from supernatural disasters. Naturally, that’s exactly what happens.

Instead of organizing books and helping people find their next favorite read, Paige discovers that her new job involves collecting and safeguarding magical artifacts that could cause some serious problems if they fall into the wrong hands.

And because apparently learning that magic exists isn’t enough of a surprise, she also gets a tiny, sarcastic dragon named Dewey as her partner.

A MAGICAL LIBRARY AND A DRAGON? Okay, Nellie H. Steele, you officially have my attention.

One of the most entertaining aspects of this story is the combination of Paige’s complete lack of preparation and the absolutely ridiculous situations she finds herself in. She’s clumsy, inexperienced, and suddenly expected to navigate a supernatural world that doesn’t exactly come with an instruction manual.

And then there are the werewolves.

Because why should your first assignment be something simple when you could potentially be dealing with an entire multiplying werewolf population?

I really like the concept behind the Shelving Magic series. A secret magical library responsible for keeping dangerous supernatural artifacts out of circulation opens up so many possibilities for future adventures. There is something wonderfully appealing about a world where librarians aren’t just protecting knowledge; they’re protecting everyone else from the magical disasters that knowledge can unleash.

Dewey is another fun addition. A teacup-sized dragon with an attitude is exactly the kind of companion I want in my fantasy adventures. Give me a tiny dragon with opinions over a boring coworker any day.

The story blends humor, magical mishaps, mystery, and danger while introducing readers to a larger supernatural world. There is plenty of room for Paige to grow into her responsibilities, and I appreciate that she doesn’t suddenly become an expert simply because she’s discovered magic.

What makes this such an interesting series starter is the potential. Magical artifacts to uncover, secrets surrounding the library, and an entire hidden world waiting to be explored.

Final Thoughts

Shadow Beasts is a quirky urban fantasy adventure built around a magical library, a very unprepared heroine, supernatural trouble, and one wonderfully sassy little dragon.

If you enjoy magical libraries, paranormal mysteries, reluctant heroines, and fantasy stories that don’t take themselves too seriously, this is one to consider.

And seriously, if someone offered me a job in a magical library with a dragon coworker, I’d probably accept before asking about the benefits package.

Although I might insist on hazard pay.
