A debut high-stakes fantasy romance trilogy set against a once-in-a-generation duel to the death between rival witches and dragon riders as they battle to control the source of all magic in their kingdoms. Perfect for fans of Fourth Wing, Throne of Glass, and Quicksilver.

You duel or you die.

Astrid has always known she is destined to die. She is the last Nachstern witch and heir to the Queendom of Arturea, cursed by a centuries-old covenant to duel the heir to the Kingdom of Vatra for the source of all magic: the Heart. And now Astrid’s time is up. She is heading into enemy territory to face Prince Zryan, the most powerful dragon rider in eons, with only her familiar, her potions, and her wits to aid her. She is going to die, and any chance her queendom has of curing the Blight that’s ravaging the lands and killing her people will die with her.

Meanwhile, deep in dragon country, Skylar and her travelling troupe arrive in Vatra’s capital, ready to profit off the legions of spectators swarming to the city ahead of the duel. She despises the royals and all they stand for, especially as the King’s guard murdered her mother. But when her best friend disappears, suspected to have been taken in the conscription, her search takes her closer to the royals than she ever could have imagined.

As the duel looms over the kingdom, Skylar and Astrid’s fates intertwine. They must battle a growing rebellion, their inner demons, and ultimately, those they love most, to determine if together they will save—or doom—their world.

Bound by Fate, Forced to Fight,

I need to talk about Blood Bound because what do you mean I picked this up casually and now I’m emotionally attached and not okay???

This was supposed to be a “just one more chapter before bed” situation, and instead, I lost track of time, my sanity, and, honestly, my ability to function like a normal person. I was locked in. From the beginning. No warm-up, no easing into it, just immediate tension, immediate stakes, and I was gone.

And the way this book pulls you in without dumping a million explanations on you?? I love it when a story trusts you to keep up. The world, the magic, everything unfolds naturally, and suddenly you’re fully immersed without even realizing when it happened. One minute you’re starting it, the next you’re halfway through like “wait, I have responsibilities.”

Like, what do you mean this whole story is built around a once-in-a-generation duel between two heirs where only one of them is supposed to walk away???

From the very beginning, that tension sits on your chest. There’s no pretending this might turn out fine. It’s not a “maybe they’ll figure something out” situation—it’s a someone is going to lose everything situation, and the book never lets you forget it.

And the way it builds?? I was unwell.

Every interaction feels sharper because of it. Every moment between them has this underlying edge of “you might have to destroy each other,” and I was eating that up. It’s not just rivalry, it’s inevitability. It’s pressure. It’s fate hanging over everything they do. It’s a duel, or you die, as the tagline says on the book’s cover.

I think that’s what made this hit so hard for me. The duel isn’t just a plot device; it is the story. It shapes every choice, every hesitation, every bit of tension. You’re constantly aware of what’s coming, and instead of lessening the impact, it makes everything feel heavier.

And somehow the romance builds inside that??? Like, excuse me???

This is peak “we should not feel this way” energy. The slow burn works so well here because it’s tangled up in the fact that they are literally meant to be each other’s downfall. Every look, every moment of softness feels dangerous, like it shouldn’t exist, and that just made it ten times more intense for me. And then when one doesn’t end up being the one to be dueled but his sister, oh my lord.

I was reading like: this is a bad idea, this is SUCH a bad idea…don’t stop

And the atmosphere feeds into it even more. Everything feels a little dark, a little tense, like the world itself is holding its breath waiting for this duel to happen finally. I never felt relaxed reading this, not in a bad way, but in that “I cannot look away” kind of way. Like, how is this going to turn out? Are they going to stand and defy the king, or actually take each other out?

By the time I got deeper into the book, I was fully invested not just in who would win, but how this was even going to play out without completely breaking everything. And honestly?? I’m still thinking about it.

This ended up being such an easy five stars for me because it gave me exactly what I didn’t know I needed: high-stakes, emotionally loaded, slow-burning tension wrapped around a conflict that feels completely unavoidable, with dragons and adorable familiars and an honest-to-goodness ode to female relationships that makes me want to hug my best friend.

And yeah… I’m not over it. Not even a little.
