A young girl begins to question her picture-perfect world in this first installment of Scott Westerfeld’s New York Times bestselling and award-winning Uglies series—a global phenomenon that started the dystopian trend.
Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she can’t wait. In just a few weeks she’ll have the operation that will turn her from a repellent ugly into a stunningly attractive pretty. And as a pretty, she’ll be catapulted into a high-tech paradise where her only job is to have fun.
But Tally’s new friend Shay isn’t sure she wants to become a pretty. When Shay runs away, Tally learns about a whole new side of her world—and it isn’t very pretty. The authorities offer Tally a choice: find her friend and turn her in, or always be an ugly. Tally’s decision leads her on a journey of self-discovery and first love—but it’s the seeds of rebellion that will change her life and her world forever.
Review:
I picked up Uglies after watching the movie, and it was good enough to make me curious about the books. I checked it out from the library on audiobook. I was not a massive fan of the narrator, but the story was good enough that though I knew the main aspects of what was going to happen due to already watching the movie, I like the fact that I have a solid understanding of the parts that were not in the film. The story is your typical dystopian tale. You have two groups of people, uglies, and pretties, and the rebel faction and the secret group trying to root out the rebels, in this case, exceptional circumstances. I can see why this is such a popular book series in the younger crowds; there are the ones who are laser-focused on how they look and how others perceive them. They have a strong understanding of what motivates them and will take a lot from this book series. I am way beyond that age group, so I am not the main person for the message that beauty is inside, not outside, but I think everyone needs that reminder now and then.
