Darrow is a Helldiver, one of a thousand men and women who live in the vast caves beneath the surface of Mars, generations of people who spend their lives toiling to mine the precious elements that will allow the planet to be terraformed. Just knowing that, one day, people will be able to walk the surface of the planet is enough to justify their sacrifice. The Earth is dying, and Darrow and his people are the only hope humanity has left. Until the day Darrow learns that it is all a lie. That Mars has been habitable - and inhabited - for generations, by a class of people calling themselves the Golds. A class of people who look down at Darrow and his fellows as slave labour, to be exploited and worked to death without a second thought.
Review:
Red Rising by Pierce Brown reminded me of a more adult version of The Hunger Games, with Darrow playing the part of Katniss as he remade from a lowly Red to a high-class Gold. Red Rising is set on mars with a unique class system where everyone represents a color; at the bottom, colors like pinks and reds, and at the top of the world Golds. When Darrow losses everything and is on the chopping block of being killed instead of dying, he is recruited to become something he never thought he could be. The creativity and the echoes of it being like the hunger games kept me reading. I wanted to know if Darrow would make it, who would be his allies, and at the end, I wanted to know what he would do in the rest of this series. Like Katniss, will he succeed in changing his world, or will he be found out, and someone else will be chosen to try again? I did find that information interesting that others have tried to do this same thing and not succeeded; I am not sure I will be ok with those odds.
