Told in two different timelines present-day and summer when 11-year-old Caddie meets Danielle, and her lonely summer becomes one overshadowed with dark secrets. After that summer, Danielle calls Cadie back to their small town to come to the truth of those dark secrets twenty-six years later.
Interwoven in this story is the story of immigrants, droughts, devastating environmental problems, and how childhood can go from being sweet innocence to grown up issues in the blink of an eye. When you read about Cadie and Danielle’s adventures of climbing rocks, swooning over a boy, or picking blueberries in the wild, it echoes back to what we all wish childhood were like now. When you went out in the morning and did not come home, tell dark, lost in adventures with your friends.
The present side of the story shows the harsh reality of what has become of our environment and how many people choose to ignore what is right in front of their eyes.
