Building on homages to Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Jane Austen’s Emma and the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, Hannah West makes a spectacular debut.
Jan’s Review
This is an amazing mash up of a few fairy tales – Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Jane Austen Emma and a Chinese’s legend i never heard of. That being said i loved how it also had it own unique magic and political war brewind underneath the story.
Bristal is our main character and has been found abandoned and then dragged off to be thrown into this magic Water where it turns out she a very powerful elimonancer who has a knack for shape shifting.
Then the fairy tales get woven into the story which really for a minute i was wait that part sounds familiar then it dawned on me that the author was cleverly winding these tales in. Their some heart ache with the swoony romance that about made me burst into to tears. As with all fairy tales their some upbeat happy moments to make it all better in the end. The Kingdom of Ash and Briars wil have your wishing you had your own dip into the Water to find your own eliomancer magic. I read for the rest of this series.
