Mila narrowed her eyes. “You might find more than you want to know. Take my advice: forget him. Leave Ulula and don’t return.”

Jade frowned. Mila straightened and half-turned away from her, busying her hands with reorganising the bolts of cloth laid out over the table. Jade stared, puzzled. Then she also turned away.

“In case you’re wondering,” Mila said, inclining her head, though by her manner Jade couldn’t be sure whether the comment was addressed to her or not. “That’s the Traveller who was asking questions.”

Jade froze, looking past Mila to see a Traveller who was speaking to another trader, jabbing his finger at a sheet of paper that he was holding up. Jade didn’t recognise him, but she backed up a step, bumping into Mila’s stall.

“Careful,” Mila warned.

Jade kept her eyes firmly fixed on the Traveller. “Thanks,” she whispered to Mila as she edged around the stall. She ducked between the poles holding up another market stall, paused, and then stepped out among several customers, attempting to blend into their group.

The Traveller moved along too, approaching the next stall holder and holding out the same sheet of paper. He hadn’t seen her.

Jade held her breath and strode in the opposite direction, but people stared at her as she passed. She fixed her eyes to the ground and hurried along, though she couldn’t resist another glance over her shoulder.

As she looked behind her, she almost bumped into a wall. Her eyes widened as she saw a familiar face.

Her own.

Jade stumbled backwards in surprise. She gawked at her own image, scrambling to make sense of it.

It was a poster—a line drawing of her likeness—a fair replica of her current appearance. They’d captured her shaved head, green eyes, and the shape of her face. Above the picture, large black letters announced she was wanted for attempted murder. Below, a reward was offered for information leading to her arrest. Underneath, in the largest letters, it read: Alive or Dead.

A large sum. Large enough to interest people in looking for her.

“Hey!”

A loud voice close to her ear startled Jade, and she spun around to see a Neufer man staring, first at her and then at the poster. He pointed. “Is that—?”

About Zara:

Zara Quentin is the author of Airwoman, the first book in the Airwoman series. She was raised in Adelaide, Australia, with one younger sister. Zara grew up with a strong sense of adventure, which she inherited from her parents, who took her and her sister on trips to the United States, Europe, and Asia.

She also inherited a love of reading from her mother. Throughout her childhood she explored fictional places through books, and in particular, through fantasy novels. She’d turn the black and white text on the page into the colourful worlds of her imagination.

After graduating from high school, Zara studied at the University of Adelaide and has lived in France, London, and Auckland, New Zealand. She is always determined to fit in as much travel as possible, spending time in Europe, the United States, southern Africa, Morocco, Peru, the Pacific and south-east Asia.

Zara now resides in Melbourne, Australia with her husband and three children. She is currently working on the next instalment in the Airwoman series.
