Sil was perfectly content as the manager of the village plant shop. That is, until a certain wizard, Wixen Anders Kessel, requested a fire curry plant to add to what Sil assumed was his growing graveyard of helpless greenery. Thoroughly convinced of Anders' proclivity to kill every plant he purchases, Sil is determined to thwart the disastrous wixen's intentions, both for his garden and recruiting a magically disinclined apprentice. Sil and Anders return from the beloved short story, "The Wizard's Garden", to grow in friendship, companionship, and perhaps even more. Together, they encounter a variety of local magical creatures, spells, and obstacles as Sil resists the idea that he might actually have a talent for magic and that he might want something more from the hopeless wizard after all...

Reading Challenges: All books

Sowing Spells is such a sweet, cozy fantasy full of plants, magic, magical creatures, and a wonderfully quirky cast of characters. Sil is perfectly happy working at the village plant shop until Anders, a wizard with a rather unfortunate talent for killing plants, keeps wandering into his life. Somehow that turns into Sil getting pulled further and further into a magical world he isn’t entirely convinced he belongs in.

I really enjoyed Sil and Anders’ relationship. There is something adorable about watching their friendship slowly grow while Sil stubbornly resists both his magical abilities and his feelings for Anders. Their personalities play off each other really well, and I especially enjoyed the banter and the quieter moments between them.

But the cozy magical world was probably my favorite part. There are spells, magical plants, dragons, three-headed geese, gnomes, gardening, cooking, and plenty of little magical mishaps. I also loved the field-guide elements scattered throughout the book. They make it feel like you’re getting a peek inside this world instead of simply reading about it.

This isn’t a fantasy filled with huge battles and world-ending stakes. It’s much more about finding your place, discovering unexpected talents, building a found family, and realizing that sometimes the life you thought you wanted isn’t nearly as wonderful as the one growing right in front of you.

If you love cozy fantasy, plant magic, found family, magical creatures, slow-burn friends-to-lovers romance, and slightly chaotic wizards, Sowing Spells is definitely one to pick up.
