A noble woman fleeing violence. A band of rebels opposing the monarchy. An unlikely romance. And the secret that could unravel the world.

Plucked from obscurity to live an easy life as the princess’s companion, my place in the castle has always been certain.

That is, until the sadistic prince claims me for his own and danger closes in around me.

In a fit of fear, I abandon everything and sneak into the back of a carriage of a handsome stranger. I find myself among a band of rebels plotting to dismantle our sacred hierarchies. I’m lonely and afraid, and though Reggie, the leader of the band, despises nobles like me, he is the first person who believes I am someone special.

As the truth comes hurtling at me, I must decide between throwing my lot in with Reggie and the band of rebels, or returning to a life of comfort and ease.
But the ruthless king has his secrets and will hunt us to the ends of the kingdom to stop the rebels and drag me back to the castle.

In this fantastical world steeped in lore, a rigid social structure, slow-burn steamy romance, and adventure, Raven’s journey of self-discovery will grip you from the moment you enter the Kingdom of Valia.

One Escape. One Rebellion. Endless Trouble.

I’m always drawn to fantasy stories about characters who are pushed far outside their comfort zones, so A Road of Shadows and Crows immediately caught my attention. From the first few chapters, I could tell this was going to be one of those journeys where nothing goes as planned—and where the road ahead is darker and more complicated than anyone expects.

From the start, the story drops us into a tense royal world where appearances matter, and power is everything. Raven, our main character, lives a life shaped by court expectations, where she is forced to serve as a companion to the lighting king’s daughter and has no idea who she really is, beyond being taken from her mother at a very young age. It doesn’t take long before everything around her begins to crack. When a cruel prince threatens her safety and her future, Raven makes a desperate choice to run—straight into a world she has never known and believes is one way, but finds out soon that she has been raised in a dangerous web of lies.

What follows is a road story filled with danger, secrets, and uneasy alliances. Raven ends up traveling with rebels who want to tear down the very system she once belonged to. That setup alone had me hooked. I love a story where a character is forced to question everything they thought they understood about their world.

One thing I really appreciated is that Raven isn’t instantly fearless. She’s scared, uncertain, and constantly trying to figure out where she belongs. Watching her slowly grow stronger and more independent as the journey unfolded felt genuine and satisfying. Her development is really the heart of the book.

The rebel group adds another layer of tension, especially with their leader. There’s a lot of mistrust between him and Raven at first—understandably so—and that friction creates some great moments throughout the story. Their dynamic has a slow, simmering energy, where respect builds gradually rather than appearing out of nowhere.

Atmosphere is another thing this book does well. The world feels gritty and shadowy, with the sense that danger is always just around the corner. As Raven moves farther from the palace and deeper into rebel territory, the story begins to reveal the complicated truths behind the kingdom and the people trying to change it.

By the time I reached the final chapters, I felt like Raven had only just begun her real journey. The book leaves you with that lingering feeling that wider choices and bigger battles are coming.

By the final pages, I realized this story isn’t just about escaping a palace or joining a rebellion—it’s about Raven learning who she is when the rules of her old life no longer apply. A Road of Shadows and Crows feels like the beginning of something much bigger, and I closed the book feeling both satisfied and incredibly curious about where Raven’s path will lead next.

About Viola Nichols

Viola Nichols writes epic romantic fantasy, where enemies become lovers while feisty heroines embrace their inner power. She lives in the woods of Rhode Island, where she and her husband are raising two woodland sprites and two pups. When not writing emotionally damaging romantasy, you can find her hiking, reading angsty, moody fantasies, fiddling, and dabbling in forbidden magic in the woods.
