A prophecy was given to the Realm of Valeera, but only one kingdom took heed to it and set forth a law that would divide the people into two groups. The Fair and the Strange. One group possessed a promise from the gods while the other is doomed for eternity. Well, that's what the people believed...
17-year-old Mageia Unknown is an orphan and the leader of a group of defected youths living on the outskirts of the Kingdom of Ardania. Growing up into a skilled thief and sword fighter, she makes it her duty to take care of her family, no matter the cost. But when an act of heroism goes wrong, she finds her fate lies in the hands of someone she grew up to hate.
17-year-old Grisonce Arlon is not the most respected prince in the kingdom. But when his obsession with the Fairest Prophecy intervenes with the case of the one called the Purple Thief, he turns into a royal joke. The odds are against him and Mageia with no joy or deliverance in sight. Their world may be divided by the fairest and the strangest, but all would soon discover that unity may come in the form of a woman with purple eyes.
Review:
The Fairest is the first book in The Fairest series, a world where if you are born with an imperfection such as purple eyes, skin conditions, or a hunchback, you face slavery or death. Maegia is known as the Purple Thief due to her unusually identifiable purple eyes and the fact that she cheated death at least once. Mageia and her family have been stealing and saving children from being sacrificed to gods, but when the king changes the rule of not killing children in the sacrifices and slates 12 children to die, Mageia can’t ignore it. What this decision unravels is a fantastic, heart-pounding, high-stakes story. The author is intentional in her worldbuilding and lays out the lay of the land and how things work in great detail so that being a visitor to the world, you won’t be lost. Readers who adventure into this tale will meet Mageia and will be in awe of her strength and determination, Dean’s tender heart, Gris, a prince with a stutter that makes him Strange (those with deformities), and the evil villains are as wicked as they can be with no punches pulled. Fans of heroines faced with impossible choices while struggling to accept their destiny will connect with this story.
