They killed my mother.
They took our magic.
They tried to bury us.

Now we rise.

Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zélie’s Reaper mother summoned forth souls.

But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope.

Now Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.

Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers and her growing feelings for an enemy.

Reading Challenges: 2024 Audiobook challenge

Review:

Children of Blood and Bone is violent, brutal, magical, and spellbinding – a fantastic debut. They blend West African folklore with Fantasy and inspiration drawn from the modern world events.
Following two sets of siblings – on the one hand, Zélie and Tzain, whose Mother was part of a tribe of Maji, who have been enslaved by the monarchy after magic disappeared suddenly (now called diviners) and are now treated like scum. On the other hand, it also follows Amari and Inan, the prince and princess of their kingdom or Orïsha. When an artifact that could bring magic back to Orïsha is discovered, all their lives are turned upside-down, causing the characters to literally and figuratively go on journeys.
Especially pronounced is Zélie’s discovery of herself and her power and Amari’s breaking free of the role her family has set for her – both representing powerful female characters.
