Twelve-year-old Ankido is on a quest to save his missing father through the magical realm of Mesopo.
Mesopo is the land where all fantasy originates, a land whose words and language are in peril. Can Ankido save his father and restore all these words in time?
It was a red velvet box, the size of a school book. Ankido lifted the lid, revealing an old-fashioned quill made out of a reed. It smelled remote and otherworldly. Ancient. And for a reason he couldn't explain, everything felt all right for a moment.
He thought he caught a sound flowing out of the quill, a word maybe. He wasn't sure and he shook his head. This was ridiculous. No, he surely must have been mistaken. But there! There was the sound again. This time Ankido was sure of it.
"Mesopo" ... whispered in a way that slipped around the room like the warm breeze of the desert.
"Vibrant characters and prose energize this literary adventure." --Kirkus Reviews

12-year-old Akindo’s dad left for Iraq on a field trip due to his archeology work, and there has been no news of his whereabouts. Akindo is given a quest to save the magical land of Mesopo, which is where all fantasy comes from, and his dad. Habubti, his grandmother, entrusts him with a book titled “The Land of Mesopo” and a quill and leaves him with uncle and aunt. Once grandmother has, his aunt sends him off to boarding school for her selfish reasons. Fate intervenes, and Akindo lands in the desert leading to the Library of Nineveh, the connection between our world and Mesopo. Akindo quest begins as he discovers that words are stolen, his dad and grandmother are stuck there, and only the new “Tale Smith” can save them.

This whole setup makes for an exciting story that layered in imagery, unique words, and a lot of creative thinking. The key theme in the story is the importance of words, stories, and books in our lives and infuses us with the strength that the only boundary in our lives is the limitation of our imagination. I thoroughly enjoyed the adventure and added a few new words to my vocabulary. I want to be a tale smith too.
